Streetsville "Small Village" Charm
In an attempt to maintain a separate identity from the largest city, several of Mississauga Roads as they pass through Streetsville revert to what they were called when Streetsville was an independent village.
An example would be Mississauga road, converting to Queen Street as you pass through Streetsville, and once you are exit, it becomes Mississauga Road again. For tourists, this is both an interesting and confusing part of Streetsville, however maintaining its authenticity and uniqueness is important to preserve its charm.
Streetsville has an appropriate nickname, "The Village in the City". If you ever take a walk down Streetsville, you will find stores on either side of the street, which can relate to what you need.
History
Looking back at the history of Streetsville, you will find that its founder is Timothy Street. Street was born in 1778 in the American colonies to a British Loyalist damily.
In 1818 the British made a purchase of 648,000 acres of land; before it was opened for settlement, the land had to be surveyed. At the time, surveyors were granted part of the land as compensation for their work.
The qualified surveyors who applied for the contract at the time were none other than Timothy Street and Richard Bristol.
Street saw potential for a settlement along the Credit River, and made plans to erect a saw and grist mill once his work was complete.
In 1819, the surveyed land was opened for settlement and Street built his saw and grist mills using materials from the first settler, James Glendinning.
In 1858, Streetsville was incorporated as a village, and Timothy Street's son, John Street was the first reeve.
For the next century, Streetsville existed as a narrow village with all of its shops, churches library and the cenotaph located on Queen Street.
In 1953, two of the first suburbs in Canada, Vista Heights and Riverview were built to the southwest and northeast respectively.
In January 1962, Streetsville population reach 5,000 and it was then incorporated as a town, with the first Mayor being Frank Dowling.
With the creation of the Town of Mississauga in 1968, it amalgamated the villages and hamlets.
Streetsville is considered to be one of Mississauga's most affluent communities.
